Roos Wrap Round 1

It was good to be back playing football last week as we took on the reigning premiers Chidlow on what was a pretty good day for football. An odd shaped ground greeted us, both teams were going to need to play corridor football, no pockets to see here, as the ground undergoes some much-needed upgrades!

Tyson was playing his 200th game as six fresh faces came into the team. Matthew O’Keefe, Rory Stewart, Brock Jasiorowski, Matt Hampson, Andy Deabreu and Cam Nicol, all playing their first games as Roos.

We started well as Keefy took the reins in the ruck, first use of it out of the centre as the boys got down to business. We had plenty of it but couldn’t kick a goal as Aussie and Tyson struggled to find the target, Aus taking a cracking mark before kicking out on the full the perfect example of how we were doing the hard work without capitalising! Tyson finally got us underway as we slowly wore Chidlow down, four goals eight for the quarter to nothing, we were off to a solid start.

Cam was off with a broken thumb early and with Aussie on the sidelines being patched up after a big hit late in the quarter, we were down to two on the bench to start the second.

Keeefy continued where he left off, dominating the ruck, Jake, Luke and Jesse were finding plenty of it as Tyson and Mick started to take advantage of the great work further up the ground, it was very apparent this was not the Chidlow of last year as they struggled to keep up, eight goals twelve to one point at the main change.

The boys were feeling the heat as we started the second half with Chidlow nowhere to be seen, Rory and Dev joined the boys in the middle as Chook, Marty and Nick repelled everything that came down back. We started to find our rhythm with Tyson, Mick and a patched-up Aussie kicking goals, nine goals to a point for the quarter, we had blown Chidlow away.

Chidlow finally kicked their first goal early in the last quarter as the boys began to feel the effects of a very hot day, Lyndsey was done for the day, Kizza confined to the goal square adding to Cam’s injury. Chook shifted forward to kick a couple of sneaky goals and with Nick into the ruck the boys closed out the game big winners over a Chidlow team that will certainly be a tougher opponent next time we meet!

Tyson, Jake, Chook, Luke and Aussie our best on the day with awesome games, Keefy picked up the peep show award for his great work in the ruck and around the ground.

Tyson kicked seven, Aussie six, Mick four, Chook two with singles to Jake and Lyndsey on what was a fantastic team effort.

Another big challenge today as we take on an emerging Mount Helena at home, they will be out to continue their good start to the season and nothing but a four quarter effort from us will get the job done, work hard boys and we will continue to improve.

ROOS WRAP FINALS – 1st SEMI

Roos Wrap

A glorious sunny day greeted us last time out as we faced Gidgey in a do or die first semi-final. The early start brought a change in routine and the boys were keen to impress in front of a big contingent of our supporters.
Elf and Mick made way for Jarrad and Rhys in what was going to be a major test for the young Roos, two weeks earlier we had lost narrowly and our best was needed if we were to get the job done.
A torrid start as the both teams were eager to gain the early ascendency, lots of pressure meant lots of mistakes and neither team could take advantage of their opportunities. Gidgey struck first before we finally found the goals, Kizza marking strongly and kicked truly to have it one goal apiece at the first change.
Some subtle changes in the second as we worked to improve our game, Tank and Jakey started to find the ball but again it was Gidgey who kicked the first of the quarter before we began to come to life. Two goals apiece to Kizza and Jake with Tyson and Mikey chiming in and we had a handy four goal lead at the main break.
The third quarter belonged Dev down back, Jesse on the wing and Aussie up forward as we piled on the pressure. Dev took a screamer to set the tone, Jesse provided the run forward and Austin took advantage with three for the quarter.
A late skirmish had Callum sent from the ground along with two of his mates from Gidgey, one with a red card gone for the day they would be one player down for most of the last quarter, we had a big lead going in to the last.
The last quarter and the game was in our keeping, Dylan Larsen was running as hard as he was at the start and Lindsey and Mikey had their chance to step up and take advantage. Lindsey kicked four with Mikey three for the quarter and when Rhys kicked the last of the game after some hard running from Gaz we had blown the game apart to win by thirteen goals.
Lindsey and Mikey five each on the day, Tyson, Austin and Kizza three apiece, Jakey two and Rhys one on the day. Tank stood out with Jakey close behind, Kizza found his form third best with Dylan Larsen rounding out the top four. Dev picked up the Mr Magic award for his good game, Lindsey and Musto picking up the peepshow awards in what was a great team effort on the day.
Today’s preliminary final against a Cougars team smarting after their loss to Pickering Brook, a massive prize to the winner in another do or die game. We must raise our game again if we are to be a chance, take every opportunity and play our best and never give up.

ROOS WRAP – RND 16 2018

Roos Wrap

Our last home and away game of the year last time out as we faced Gidgegannup on hot and sunny day at their home ground. Jake, Nick, Lindsey and Luke Grieg came back in for Beavo, Jarrad, Rhys, Jack Greig and Waggs. A tough game on the cards as both teams were eager for a win going in to finals.
Gidgie were quick out of the blocks kicking the first couple with the Roos fighting back through Austin and Lindsey to get back even. In what was to be a common theme to the game Gidgie kicked ahead again only for us to fight back, we were turning the ball over regularly leading to goals for the opposition. Late goals to Mick Italiano and Lachy Nichol got us four for the quarter but we were down by a goal at the first change.
More of the same in the second as both teams continued to slug it out, we were getting smoked in the middle of the ground but our backline was hanging tough. Luke and Nick were linking up well but we weren’t finding anyone in the forward line to capitalise. We kicked a heap of points before Jakey took charge and when Lachie got busy to kick his second for the game were down by eight points at the main change.
Some challenges to address at the main break with both sides feeling the heat of the day and that of the game, we needed to improve if we were to get up. Again, Gidgie kicked the first for the quarter before Cal decided to step up, two cracking running goals keeping us in the hunt and when Lindsey kicked his second for the game it was back to a six-point margin at the last change.
The last quarter was on and it was the home team who gained the ascendency kicking the first two before Kizza kicked a good crumbing goal to bring us back to life. Gidgie responded quickly before a nasty head knock to one of their players brought the game to a halt.
We needed three goals to win, young Lachie chimed in with his third for the game and when Nick goaled from long range as we rolled the dice we were down by three points only seconds to go in the game. It was all to no avail as the siren rang, Gigdgie winners by three points.
Nick, Callum, Luke, Tank, Dylan and Dev our best players on the day with Lachie taking home the peepshow award for his three goals. Lindsey and Cal two goals apiece, singles to Mick, Jake, Austin and Kizza.
The equation is simple today win and we progress, lose and its mothballs for the year. A big opportunity for us to show how far we have come, play our best football and we know we will be in the hunt, no excuses today let’s earn the right to play again next week.

ROOS WRAP – RND 15 2018

Roos Wrap

An unknown quantity awaited as the Roos faced the Bushrangers in our final home game for the year. A few unfamiliar faces for the opposition as they called on some past players to help them field a team, anything to get a game for four points was the thoughts of the boys.
Jake, Nick, Andy, DJ, Crash and Lindsey, made way for Michael, Kizza, Chook, Lachlan, Rhys and Jesse. The game started with sixteen a side a first for the year and something we were going to need to come to terms very quickly.
We quickly found a competitive Bushrangers outfit who were eager to take it up to us at every chance. Their fill-ins were stretching us, the regulars were lifting alongside them and at the first change it was three goals apiece and the coach had plenty to think about.
A better start by the Roos in the second as the captain took control in the middle. Gaz and Dylan began to follow suit and Tyson and Austin took full advantage of the better play further up the field, Tys with three goals for the quarter.
Waggs thought he would get in on the act chiming in with two for the quarter, Luke and Marty dominating across half back, we had kicked seven to one and we were out to a six-goal lead at the half.
Parky had the breeze in the third and again piled on the pressure, some of the fill-ins put the clamps on Tys and Aus and the boys had to work hard to keep it even. Musto started to relish his time on the wing, Lachie found himself in unfamiliar territory down back and we turned for home with a seven-goal break.
The lack of numbers for Parky began to show in the last with the younger legs of the Roos standing up, Cal and Micko kicked early goals, Tyson and Aus sealed the deal and we were home by ten goals in the end. Austin six, Tyson five, Mikey and Waggs two a piece with singles to Pepper, Callum and Micko.
On the day none were better than Tank with Austin close behind, Gaz continued with his fine form to be third best, Callum showed great run on the day fourth, Lukey rounding out the top five for his ball use across half back and Marty picked up the peepshow award doing everything the coaches asked for.
Some mentions on the day, Dev had a ball tearing clearance in the middle his best kick of the day only for it to be the wrong way, LG took boundary umpiring to a whole new level, Jakey even whilst not playing still managed to find his way into the middle and onto the massage table, Nick clearly not happy with sitting out, drove everyone on the bench mad with his umpiring advice, the only saving grace he was telling us and not Lindsay in the middle!
A big game today against Gidgie as we look to finish up the regular season with a win, continued improvement and a four-quarter effort a must if we are to bring home the points.

ROOS WRAP – RND 14 2018

Roos Wrap

A young Bullsbrook side at home was the task for the Roos on another clear but windy day. Kizza, Chook, Callum, Rhys and Jesse making way for Dev, Lindsey, Jack, Waggs, Tyson and Myles coming in for his 50th game for the club.
A glittery banner and the year 6 junior team greeted the boys as they ran out, Myles handed the role of captain with the obligatory rev up chat in his hands!
The game started with a quick win out of the middle Austin unable to take a chest mark, Tyson unable to kick his first shot on goal and Dev flying at a mark unsuccessfully missing his shot, three points to start the game.
Tys made good shortly after as he kicked truly from close range the boys were away the first of eight for the quarter. It wasn’t all our own way with Bully kicking two of their own they were having a crack and we needed to show some respect.
Tank enjoyed his time in the forward line during the second term kicking three for the quarter, he and Austin were in everything, both with four goals to half time. Jake, Gaz and Myles were finding plenty through the middle of the ground, Luke and Nick repelling everything that came their way across half back.
The plucky young Saints found plenty after the main break to really take it up to the Roos, more than matching our attack on the ball and on the scoreboard, we had gotten lazy and stopped showing respect.
A gentle reminder to the team at three quarter time that they needed to work hard certainly paid off after the break as the boys snapped back into gear, Tyson and Austin again stepped up as Lindsey and Dylan continued to drive the ball forward, Aussie the main beneficiary with four in the quarter.
The young Saints wilted in the last as the extra numbers and experience began to show, the Roos big winners on the day, all credit to Bullsbrook they never gave up and showed plenty for the future.
Austin won the day with nine goals, Tyson six, Tank four, Myles three and Micko a good day out with two. Singles to DJ, Beavo, Connor, Gaz and Dylan, with Lukey sneaking forward to kick his first goal for the year.
Tank our best on the day, Jakey close behind with Gaz rounding out the top three, Austin fourth with Nick the Mr Magic winner on the day, Myles the peep show winner for a cracker of a game.
Well Done to Tyson and Jess for getting engaged, well planned Tys and about time. The biggest congratulations go out to Bec and Maitland on the arrival of their bouncing baby boy Lincoln James, great work Bec we all look forward to meeting him!
Second time lucky with Parkerville this week at home lets continue to improve and work hard to achieve a four quarter effort.

ROOS WRAP – RND 13 2018

Roos Wrap

A clear but breezy day greeted us as we tackled the ladder leaders Chidlow. Andy, Marty, Micko, Crash and Tank came in for Lindsey, Waggs, Michael, Luke and Jack Greig.
Both teams were eager to get the early ascendancy and it was Chidlow who settled first with opening two goals, we were struggling to find it in the middle of the ground. We slowly began to settle as an unlikely forward popped up to answer the challenge, TBag marking in the goal square on the end of good pass from Tank and when he followed up with a second moments later we were all square.
Chidlow quickly countered with their third, when Musto kicked a mongrel pie floater that somehow made it through for a goal in the swirly breeze, we were all square at the first change.
After Musto had a snooze on the ground courtesy of a nasty sling tackle, it was that man TBag who again proved to be the go to as he kicked his third early in the second. When Austin kicked the next we had a handy break but Chidlow were not going to lie down, turnovers and complacency letting them back in the game, the next three goals were theirs. Tank missed a sitter before Jakey entered the fray with a handy goal on the run and when the siren went we were up by a point.
The third quarter belonged to Chidlow as costly misses from Kizza and Jake prevented us from settling, we were paying the price for a lack of polish. It was not for want of trying as the boys threw themselves in, Chidlow up by almost four goals at the last change.
It would to take a big effort in the last if we were going to get near and we started in the right way Tank kicking a handy captains goal to get us underway. Jesse took advantage of a handy 100-meter penalty courtesy of some Musto creativity to close the gap to ten points, we were fighting for every goal, we were coming albeit slowly.
TBag went into the ruck and Callum into the middle as we kept the pressure on. Gaz marked a rare Chidlow mistake in our forward line to get us back to under a goal, but it was Chidlow who kicked the last late in the quarter to snuff out our challenge, ten-point winners on the day.
A great game of footy with both teams not giving an inch, Gaz our best on the day followed by Kizza for his efforts in the ruck and around the ground. Jesse continued his good form to be third best on the day, with TBag next for his three first half goals. Dyl Larson picked up the Mr Magic award for his second half efforts with Elf picking up the Peep Show award. TBag with three, the only multiple goal scorer, with singles to Jake, Jesse, Musto, Gaz, Tank and Austin.
Thanks to the traveler’s Jack, Dev and Lindsey for doing the boundary and water, Maitland the running and Milney on the Stats, dedication after his foot operation. Well done to Dev and Ellie for getting engaged, who knew it would take a trip to England for you to figure it out!
Our second last home game against an improved Bullsbrook looking to create a challenge, time to make amends boys and bounce back from last week’s loss.

ROOS WRAP – ROUND 12 2018

Roos Wrap

A wet and windy day against the Hawks in a game where we needed to win to stay in second spot. Several changes to the team who beat Mounties, Callum, Waggs, Jack, Nick, Rhys and Beavo in for Tyson, Greggo, Dev, Stew, Myles and Marty.
The Boys were keen to make amends for the loss earlier in the year and started well kicking the first through Jakey. We had a lot of the ball in our forward half and goals to Callum and a Austin special from an impossible angle soon followed, 3 goals up at the first change.
Pickers bounced back early in the second as they found their feet in the wet. Kizza, Jake Jesse and Gaz were all winning a ton of the footy however we couldn’t capitalise, a free kick turned over in our goal square late summed up the quarter, only 8 points up at the half.
Nick, Callum and LG were all playing one touch footy and on a day where goals were like gold Jarrad kicked a Cracker of a Banana from the boundary. Jesse quickly followed up with the only other goal of the quarter and we had a handy 4 goal lead in a low scoring affair at the last change.
Pickers threw everything at us at the start of the last and quickly kicked four to erase the deficit. We needed a spark, enter Callum driving the ball long with Jesse on the end of it kicking his second for the day. Pickers wouldn’t lie down and quickly responded, Waggs was then on the end of some excellent work from Rhys to give us some breathing space and when DJ marked and goaled late in the game we were home by 14 points in a tough game of footy.
Aussie and Jesse 2, Callum, DJ, Jarrad, Jake and Waggs 1 each, our goal scorers on the day. Jake our best closely followed by Jesse and Gaz with Callum and Nick rounding out the top 5, LG picking up the Peep Show award for his good work down back.
A great night last Saturday as we held our annual Quiz night at the Hub, awesome support from a heap of people ensured it was an outstanding success. Lots of great prizes donated, Della’s Veggie packs a standout with a Bet Thomas original going for a bomb at auction, Wayne picked up the much talked about tool box and Jess’s table took out the quiz!
Another big challenge this weekend as we take on the undefeated Cougars. More changes with Bali and work taking priority, however another opportunity for the young Roos to continue to improve and build towards the finals, a four-quarter effort required in what is sure to be a tough contest.
